Bond now drew up outside the Pyramid building. He checked his watch. 8.30 a.m. He had exactly half an hour to carry out his plan. There were no lights on in the nearby office. It was daylight by this time so Bond had one last look inside to see if Goldnojaws was in residence. He wasn’t. If he had been Bond would have killed him on the spot and called off the air strike, but it was not to be, things would have to be done he hard way, so in an hour’s time an estimated a hundred thousand square metres of the centre of Stockport would disappear from the face of the earth. Bond fervently hoped that Goldnojaws was already down the cavern so that the dwarf would disappear along with it. Bond drove the Aston Martin up to the door of the Pyramid, got out and opened the boot. The stench that greeted him was truly awful. The boot was brimful of rotting fruit and vegetables. Bond firmly believed in the maxim of ‘tried and tested’ so never wasted time looking for a new idea when an old one would suffice. In this instance the old idea was the one he’d used with the giant rats in the Dr Zog case. If it had been successful in luring the giant rats towards the White Cliffs of Dover and ultimately to their death why shouldn’t it work to lure the superlocusts back down the tunnel to the cavern? They would be ravenously hungry, Bond suspected. Well he had some food for them! Bond had asked the greengrocer to include some overripe fruit and veg in the consignment as he wanted to make absolutely sure that the superlocusts picked up the scent. It might have been a case of one bad apple, but Bond suspected that the greengrocer had seized on his request as an opportunity to offload whatever rotting stock he’d had. Bond held his nose and grimaced. One thing was certain, the superlocusts certainly wouldn’t have any trouble picking up the scent and following the trail. Bond let himself into the Pyramid building, swung the doors wide open and drove the Aston through. He gasped when he saw the sight before him. There must have been two hundred or more of the superlocusts now in residence inside the Pyramid, most of them on the floor, some clinging to the walls. They were all quite still, uncannily, as though waiting for the signal to move. Bond got out of the Aston and quickly closed the doors of the Pyramid – the last thing he wanted was some of the superlocusts escaping, even if a single one of the hideous looking mutants escaped it would be enough to cause terror on the streets. |
