Dear Hasan Scarr

Thankyou for your letter of 26th May.

You are wrong, I didn't know that Sri Lanka produces tea - I'd always thought it was made at the Co-op or Sainsburys. On learning this I was of course quite relieved, although I am more than a little concerned about your use of the word 'fine' to describe your tea. Qantas Airlines used the word fine when describing their Australian wine, and if the Sri Lankan idea of what constitutes fine is anything like the Australian one your tea will be so tannic that it could remove paint at twenty paces! Perhaps you could send me a sample of your tea so that I might judge for myself whether or not it is drinkable?

As you suspected, I didn't realise that Sri Lanka was once Ceylon, so thanks for the history lesson. I sincerely hope that it is still in the Mediterranean!

I have always believed in repaying a kindness with a kindness, so in return for the history lesson I offer you a spelling lesson. Wether is spelt weather, querie is spelt query (you had it right the first time), oportunity is spelt opportunity, and Hasan is spelt Hassan.

Looking forward to receiving the sample of your tea.

Yours sincerely

T Ravenscroft (Mr)
