| Dear Geoffrey
Matthews |
|
|
|
|
Just a few
lines to let you know how much my wife and I enjoyed our holiday in Cyprus.
Your island was all that I thought it would be, and more
besides.
Happily your fears that I might get into trouble
should I enter Northern Cyprus were unfounded, although I must admit that I
took the precaution of getting my wife to wear long flowing robes and a
yashmak. Crossing the border at midnight with her on the pillion of my hired
motor bike I felt quite like Lawrence of Arabia! The only time I was asked for
my passport during our three days in the Turkish bit was when booking into a
small hotel in Kyrenia. However before handing over the passport for inspection
I took the precaution of inserting a ten pound note between its pages, and any
suspicions that the hotelier may have harboured disappeared along with the
tenner.
We both found Kyrenia to be absolutely beautiful. I
suppose that one day you hope to return there and set up home again, that is if
you are still able to get a mortgage in the Turkish bit after what happened
last time.
Ayia Napa was most pleasant too, as were the
Greek Cypriots. As you predicted they showed me no animosity whatsoever,
despite my Turkish appearance, except that is for the goatherd who spat at me,
but I think that was due to my running over one of his goats with my motor bike
rather than my looking Turkish.
I will most certainly be
visiting both bits of Cyprus again and will thoroughly recommend Aphrodite's
Isle to all my friends.
Who is Loyd
Grossman?
Yours faithfully
T
