Dear Iberia International Airways

Returning from Majorca recently on one of your aeroplanes I purchased from your drinks trolley a 25cl bottle of red Rioja. I couldn't drink it! I suspected that this might be the case even before I bought it, as Spanish wines are a long way from being my favourite product of the grape, so I have no cause for complaint really, and indeed have no intention of complaining. I do feel that you are letting yourself down though, as apart from the wines you offer to your passengers Iberia run a first class airline. Could I suggest that instead of carrying exclusively Spanish wines that you carry at least one other wine from some other country? Not Australia though, their wines are as vile as Spanish wines. A decent French Bordeaux or Rhone perhaps?

However, to get to the point of my letter - which is that after I left the wine my wife put the screw cap back on the bottle and took it home with her to use for cooking. There it was put in a cupboard in the kitchen and promptly forgotten about. A month later my wife 'found' it, and was going to use it in a marinade, but unfortunately she knocked it over, some of it splashing onto our kitchen table, which I had newly varnished. It took the varnish off the table!

Unfortunately I don't know the name of the bottler of the wine as my wife threw the bottle in the dustbin, and the dustmen took it away before I saw what the wine had done to the table. Therefore I would be very grateful if you could let me know the manufacturer of the wine, as I wish to purchase a quantity.

You might think it odd that I should wish to buy wine which I find undrinkable, and that when opened then left for a month is capable of removing varnish, but the fact is that I am in the furniture renovation business, and in the course of my work have quite often cause to remove varnish from articles of furniture. The stuff I use at the moment costs me over ten pounds a bottle for a 25cl bottle, so the Rioja works out much cheaper and is at the very least just as efficient.

I hope to hear from you soon.

Yours faithfully

T Ravenscroft (Mr)
