Dear Monarch Airlines

Returning from Malaga by Monarch Airlines recently I purchased drinks for my wife and myself from your trolley. The cost of the drinks came to £3.50 sterling, and I was informed by your stewardess - a very attractive uniform by the way, although not quite as exciting as the Air UK uniform - that I could if I wished pay in Spanish pesetas and receive my change in sterling. This I agreed to and gave her a 1000 peseta note, value £5 at the going exchange rate. Imagine my surprise then when I received not the £1.50 change I was expecting but £1.20. I queried this with your stewardess and she assured me that all was in order.

I did not pursue the matter farther at this juncture as I have always found it a sound policy in life not to argue with the staff but to go directly to the top. I would expect you to make a small handling charge of course, say the one to two per cent charged by banks and bureaux de change, but to charge a rate of twenty per cent would be tantamount to piracy at high altitude, so I can only assume that your stewardess made a miscalculation. I certainly don't think for one moment that an airline of Monarch's eminence would stoop to such usury, and I therefore look forward to the return of my thirty pence, and remain,

Yours faithfully

T Ravenscroft (Mr)
