Dear Mr Ravenscroft

I refer to your letter addressed to our London office regarding your concern over crime punishment in Singapore.

Your comments are understandable, but your fears are groundless.

The penalty for dropping litter in Singapore is a fixed fine of S$500. I have yet to hear of anybody being jailed for this offence, let alone flogging.

Your example of the American youth being flogged was for a series of serious offences which necessitated bringing the matter to public light that such crimes would not be tolerated by Singapore nationals or overseas residents.

I can honestly state that during my frequent visits to Singapore, over the last 20 years that I have been employed by Singapore Airlines, I have never encountered any incident which was unfairly dealt with by the authorities.

I strongly recommend that you take the advantage of a stopover in Singapore enroute to Sydney. It has a lot to offer.

If you have any further doubts, please do not hesitate to give me a call on 061-832-6929.

Yours sincerely
